Author Biography: Laura Numeroff

Laura Numeroff is the author of several different childrens books. The most familar book is "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie." So many books of a similar nature have spanned from this story, books such as "If You GIve a Moose a Muffin," and "If You Give a Pig a Pancake."
 
Laura was born in 1953 in New York. From a very early age, Laura was surrounded by music and books. As the youngest of three girls, Laura enjoyed her box of crayons, library card, and microphone. Laura started reading and writing at a young age. She enjoyed making up her own stories, drawing pictures to go along with them, and then would write down a publisher for her book. As a child, she loved going to the library on a daily basis. Some of her favorite books were Stuart Little by E.B. White, The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss and Eloise but Kay Thompson.
 
By the time it came to go to college, Laura had a change of heart. She no longer wanted to be a writer. She instead wanted to do the same thing her sister did which was work with fashion but when she entered into the same college her sister had went to, she found she hated it. She instead took classes on photography, book writing for children, and radio broadcasting. In her book writing class, she was asked to write a book which after 4 attempts, finally got it published.
 
Laura loves to travel. She has visited every state in the U.S. but four. Some of her favorite places include Paris, Seattle, and London. On her list of places to go, she has Charleston, Australia, and the states she has not been to. Among some of the things she collects, Laura has old photos, stuffed animals, and children's books. She loves riding and ice skating. She enjoys going to the museums, the movies, and drawing to name a few.
 
Some of the books she has written include the "If you give" book series which includes If You GIve A Mouse A Cookie and The Chicken Sisters (Published by Harpercollins) Dogs Don't Wear Sneakers, The Hope Tree - Kids Speak Out About Breast Cancer (published by Simon & Schuster) Monster Munchies ( Random House) When Sheep Sleep (Abrams) You Can't Put Braces on Spaces (Greenwillow) If You Give An Author A Pencil: The Autobiography of Laura Numeroff (Richard Owens). There are several more but this is just to name a few.

Illustrator Biography: Eric Carle

Eric Carle is a talented illustrator and author. Some of the work he is know for is The Very Hungry Caterpiller and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See (Author Bill Martin, Jr). Carle has illustrated more than 70 books, several which are best sellers. These books are sold all over the world.
 
Eric Carle was born in New York. At the age of 6, he moved with his parents to Germany where he graduated from one of the top art schools in Stuttgart. He returned to America where he became a graphic designer for the New Yourk TImes. Bill Martin Jr, having seen Carle's work, approached him one day to illustrate the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See. This was the true beginning of his career. He went on to illustrate several other books as well as write and publish some of his own.
 
Many people know Carle's work when they see it. It is a work that stands out and has it's own uniqueness. Carle uses a collage style in his illustrations layering vibrant colors from hand painted papers. Many of his books also have added dimensions to them. The Very Hungry Caterpiller is an example where each page shows the trail left behind of holes from where the caterpillers has eaten. So many children enjoy his illustrations. They work with collage making their own illustrations inspired by his work. He recieves several works of art done by children each week.
 
"The themes of his stories are usually drawn from his extensive knowledge and love of nature—an interest shared by most small children. Besides being beautiful and entertaining, his books always offer the child the opportunity to learn something about the world around them. It is his concern for children, for their feelings and their inquisitiveness, for their creativity and their intellectual growth that, in addition to his beautiful artwork, makes the reading of his books such a stimulating and lasting experience."
 
A few of the books written by Carle include 1,2,3 to the Zoo, The Very Hungry Caterpiller, and the Grouchy Ladybug. Some the the books he provided illustrations for include Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See (by Bill Martin Jr.), Animals, Animals (By Laura Whipple), and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear (by Bill Martin Jr.). Several of his books that he has written and illustrated are written in different languages and sold around the world.
